In order for someone to be a civilized person they need to be polite and well- mannered. Rainsford notices that Zaroff is well dressed, even his Cossack servant, Ivan is well taken care of. Zaroff has a similar opinion regarding his prey. Rainsford, a hunter, had been traveling by boat when he fell overboard. He arrived at Zaroff's estate when he washed up on the island where Zaroff lives in isolation.
